The falling action begins when the police come to investigate after a neighbor hears a loud scream. The narrator stays calm and even invites them inside , placing his chair right above the hidden body.
The conclusion occurs when the narrator, overwhelmed by the sound of the old man's beating heart, breaks down and confesses to the murder, revealing the hidden body to the police.
