- On his way home rvw meets a strange little man and helps him carry a keg of liquor up the mountain

- at the top of the mountain Rvw meets more strange little men who are bowling with sad faces

- Rvw serves the strange men the liquor in the keg

- Rvw drinks the liquor and passes out on the mountain top.

- He wakes up and his dog is missing and his gun has been replaced

- He heads back to the village recognizes no one and sees his beard is a foot long

- Rvw has slept through the revolutionary war. All of his friends are dead or gone. He finds out that his wife is dead. The men who were bowling were the ghosts or the original Dutch settlers who return every 20 years.
