- n August 1833, Frederick Douglas,Bill Smith, William Hughes, and a slave named Eli were fanning wheet. Frederick was in a bad state.Therefore, he was not able to work.Mr.Covey had found Frederick but once he found him he tried forcing him to go back to work. Frederick couldn't get the strength to stand up so Mr.covey beat him. Frederick ended up drenched in his own blood.
- After the beating Frederick decided to go pass on a complaint to his master, even after Mr.covey ordered him to go back.Once he arrived his master assumed Mr. Covey was in the right, and told Frederick to go back unless he wanted his master to whip him.
- On fredricks way back he rann into a man , a slave 9Sandy Jenkins who was on his way home to his free wife. Jenkins took him in and gave him in and gave him the advice to go back to covey but to stop at a spot in the woods where Frederick should get a root that protects him. Frederik denied but had nothing to lose so he went to get the root.Once he got back Mr.covey didn't harm him.
- Until a day later, Mr.covey entered the stable ready to beat frederick. He took a rope and tried tying Fredricks legs . Then Frederick got the spirit to fight back.It was abrupt, Mr. Covey didn't ecpect him to withstand.He was beating covey and as well as Hughes.Frederick was tired of being take advantage of .
- After the whole situation in the stable Mr.Covey would from time to time tell Frederick that he just didn't want to beat him badly again as a way to act like Frederick didn't beat him. Then the rest of the time Frederick was stuck with him, Mr.Covey never laid his hands on him again.
- In the end, he had learned his own strength, and had gained his manhood/confidence .He had felt a change in him afterwards, He may be a slave in as how people see him but in spirit he was now free. Key Concept: In order to stay true to yourself and who you are, you have to do what you want and if anyone tells you otherwise, stand up for yourself
