The story begins with the main character and his wolf heading to a camp by Henderson Creek to meet up with his boys. He stars his journey at 9am and can tell that the cold is very dangerous and even though he got advice to never travel alone when it is -50 below, he starts his journey anyway.
He and the dog stop at noon to make a campfire so he can eat lunch. After lunch, the man begins walking towards the camp while the dog reluctantly follows after being called for.
In his trip, he accidentally breaks the ice covering the frozen river and ends up having to stop to make another fire or he risks losing his foot.
He tries to create a fire under a tree so he would have fast access to more kindle for his fire, but in doing so, he dropped a pile of snow off of the trees therefore killing his fire.
In desperation, he rushes to create a fire but every time he tries to light one, it goes out on him as he slowly loses the strength to hold the matches. He then decides to use his writs and palms to try and light the fire and the matches burn his hands causing him to drop them. He then tries to kill the dog but realizes that he doesn't have the grip strength to do so. He ultimately begins running without his clothes in even more desperation.
The man ends up succumbing to the frostbite and eventually dies. The dog is though its howling makes to the camp and tells the man's friends where his body is.
