- Hello, my name is Tinker, and today I am not doing well because the school banned students from wearing black armbands in protest against the Vietnam War, on the grounds that the protest would cause a substantial disruption to the educational environment.
- And the First Amendment is important because, by establishing that amendment, students do not "lose their constitutional rights to freedom of speech at the schoolhouse gate."
- But you don't have to be sad, because—thanks to the First Amendment—the Supreme Court ruled that the wearing of black armbands to protest the Vietnam War was a protected form of "symbolic expression," since it did not cause substantial disruption within the school environment.

- Hello, I am the school principal. Initially, I did not agree with the idea of allowing students to wear black armbands to protest the Vietnam War; however, the students argued that they possess rights protected by the First Amendment, which means they have the right to freedom of expression.
- And for those who may not know what the First Amendment is, it serves to protect fundamental liberties against government interference: freedom of speech, religion, the press, assembly, and petition.
- Now all students know that we have the right to freedom of expression and that we can wear black armbands to express our opposition to U.S. intervention—an act aimed at promoting peace that the Supreme Court protected as free speech.
