Josef Landau shot straight up in bed, his heart racing. He was sure he just heard a sound like someone kicked the door in!

(Scream)
Crash!
A crash is heard from the next room

Towering shadows burst into the room! In a moment of fear, Josef attempts to hide in the corner of his bed.

(Scream)
Stomp!
A pair of shadowy hands reach out for Josef, Josef screamed and kicked back at the hands. But the hands were too strong, and they grab him by the ankle and drag him off his bed!

Be Quiet!
(Wail)
Another shadow picks up Ruthie by the hair and hits her then tosses her to the floor with Josef, the shock of the blow shuts her up for a moment but only for her to scream even more and louder!

Crash!
Hush, Ruthie. Hush,
(Wail)
Josef held Ruthie in a protective hug and tried to calm her down. At that same moment, one of the intruders grabbed Ruth’s bed and threw it against the wall.

Still holding on to each other, the shadows dragged Josef and Ruth into the living room threw them on the floor and turned on the overhead light.

As Josef’s eyes adjusted, he saw the 5 strangers who had invaded his home. Wearing brownshirts and red swastika armbands Josef Identified them as the Sturmabteilung or Adolf Hitler’s “stormtroopers”. His parents were also in the dimly lit room, on the floor at the feet of the soldiers.

Josef’s mother notices them on the floor and tries to reach for them, but one of the Nazis grabs her nightgown and pulls her back.

The Brownshirts ignored Papa and nodded at the other men. Two of them yanked Papa to his feet and dragged him towards the door. In a moment of panic, Josef leapt to his feet, grabbed the arm of one of the men carrying his father, and tried to pull him off.

Two men jerked Josef away and held him as he fought against them.

The Nazis take Papa away to the sound of Mama and Ruth’s wails.

The Nazis trash the house, breaking furniture, smashing plates and tearing curtains.

The Nazis left as suddenly as they had come, leaving Josef and his mother and sister on their knees in the middle of the room.

After they had all cried all the tears they could, Rachel Landau led her children to her room and hugged Josef and Ruth close until morning.

Josef’s home was not the only home to be raided by the Nazis. Many other Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues were destroyed all over Germany, and tens of thousands of Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps all over the country. This event was a major act at the beginning of World War 2. They called that night Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.
