Tell them Daisy Changes her mind!!!!!!😭😭😭
Glide: 2
This vulnerable scene plays out with Daisy the night before her wedding as she cannot keep up with the sweet composed act after receiving a letter from her true beloved, Gatsby. She confides in Jordan Baker, in one hand she’s holding “a bottle of Sauterne, and the other a letter.” (76) Each of the objects she’s holding in her hand, symbolizes the two paths she can take:Following her heart or living in misery and coping with alcohol. Her emotions are too scattered as she’s stuck between two men who each have life changing things to offer. Nevertheless, she gives in to societal standards that tell women to choose wealth over happiness and goes on with marrying Tom Buchanan. This ties into the motif of the “American Dream” as Daisy and her love triangle have all the glamour and wealth they want but still can never seem to be satisfied. They distract themselves from a void of emptiness by distracting themselves with worldly things like alcohol, affairs, parties, and gossip.

This scene is important in highlighting the facade kept on wealthy people who believe it will buy them happiness. Although Daisy is showered in riches on the outside, it’s all to cover up her conflicted emotions inside and the sacrifice she has to make to achieve the American Dream. This scene also serves as another example where Tom dominates people because his grand amounts of money equates to power. The control he has on Daisy is prohibiting two genuine lovers from being together.
