  • Today we're gonna talk about very important discoveries on the Solar System
  • Good morning, and welcome to Chicago Morning News
  • Around 700 planets beyond our solar system have been discovered since 1995, and with 400 billion Milky Way stars, we estimate they contain 1 to 10 trillion orbiting planets, total
  • We can't say if there could be any life in any of them. There are several ways that scientists can use to find exoplanets
  • Since planets and stars attract light, a star appears brighter if another one passes in front, and if it comes with a planet, it can create a further small blip or dip we can observe
  • No one has found these planets before. While we think there are 100 billion planets in the Milky Way alone, we've only identified 700
  • Although there remain tremendous uncertainties, we can now safely say that the average number of planets-per-star is greater than 1.
  • If we want to know how many planets there are in the Universe, one way to make such an estimate is to detect planets to the limits of an observatory’s capabilities, and then to extrapolate how many planets there would be if we viewed it with a limitless observatory.
  • Yet Earth remains a standout, and so far, one of a kind. Of the thousands of exoplanets confirmed by our increasingly powerful telescopes, and despite extensive probing of the solar system, ours is still the only planet known to host life.
  • And that would be all for today. Thank you for joining us! See you tomorrow
