  • IngestionThe sandwich is being ingested through the mouth and is being broken down and chewed by the teeth. It is not being made into bolus (ball of food) and is moistened by the saliva (with enzymes called salivary amylase that break down the carbohydrates in the bread into simple sugars) created by the salivary glands. It is swallowed with the tongue and makes its way through the oesophagus. It is prevented going down the windpipe because of a trap called the epiglottis.

  • Digestion The oesophagus pushes the food down the the stomach in muscular contractions (peristalsis mechanical digestion). the Stomachs mechanical digestion is to churn the food up and the chemical digestion is the gastric juice which is hydrochloric acid which kills the bacteria and the mucus protects the stomach from the acid. the protein in the sandwich enzyme is protease which turns into amino acids. The liver produces bile which is stored in the gallbladder and emulsifies fats makes a larger surface area for example to work easier . The pancreas release pancreatic juice which goes into the more efficient small intestine. This is when the process of digestion is completed.

  • Absorption Food is absorbed through the lining of the small intestine into the blood. carbs which are amylase turn into simple sugars, proteins which are protease turn into amino acids and lipids which are lipase which turn into fatty acids and glycerol.
