Iago reveals his duplicitous and malicious nature. The struggle between good and evil is between Iago and Othello. This sets the stage for the insidious manipulation that will ruin Othello.

"I saw Othello’s visage in his mind, / And to his honours and his valiant parts / Did I my soul and fortunes consecrate" (1.3.33).
Desdemona has an honorable reputation and defends her husband, Othello, when he is accused of somehow tricking her into marrying him. Othello is deeply in love with Desdemona and is strong in character, as tragic heroes often are.

"I have’t. It is engender’d. Hell and night / Must bring this monstrous birth to the world’s light" (1.3.39).
Iago plans to manipulate Othello into believing that Desdemona and the lieutenant Cassio are having an affair to bring about Othello's downfall. This is the primary conflict of the play, and out of it, many characters struggle internally.
