The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street: Blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences
Les is suspicious
One major theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences. To start off, Don said "And he never did come out to look at that thing that flew overhead...Why didn't he come look out with the rest of us to look." (Page 76). That quote supports the theme because Don is referring to Les Goodman. Don blamed Goodman which lead to negative consequences for Goodman because everyone got suspicious and also started blaming him. Next, Goodman stated "You were so quick to kill Peter...maybe Peter there was trying to tell us something..." (Page 83). This scene supports the theme because when Charlie is blamed by Goodman it seems as if Goodman is off the hook. It doesn't help Charlie's case because now he's the main suspect. Lastly, Charlie declares "It's the kid. It's Tommy. He's the one!" (Page 84). This quote supports the theme because when Charlie puts the blame on Tommy everything suddenly goes chaotic. The negative consequence for that is when everyone got frazzled and destroyed each other's stuff and each other. In conclusion, holding others accountable without any evidence can lead to unpleasant results.
