Amy goes to school with 24 pickled limes to pay her debt with the other girls in school, she ate one on her way to school. She paid her debt to all the girls. Jenny Snow wanted to have some limes too but Amy remembered all of Jenny's hurtful remarks and said that she wasn't going to give her any. She made it seem like she was going to ask a question but instead told Mr. Davis about Amy's Limes. He then struck Amy on the hand.

Amy goes after Jo and Laurie when they go ice skating at the lake. Laurie tells Jo to stay near the edge because the ice is too thin in the middle. Jo fails to tell Amy this and Amy goes through the middle of the lake when chasing after them., because the ice is too thin she falls right through and almost drowns. Jo blames herself for not telling Amy about the thin ice because she was mad at Amy for burning her manuscripts.
I'm so worried for Beth. I don't know what I would do if I lost her. I don't think she will be able to get better.
Jo wants to contribute to the family's need for money since Marmee must leave to go see Mr. March who is very ill in the hospital. In the spirit of contributing, Jo goes out and cuts her hair and earns twenty-five dollars. Amy says that she has lost her " one beauty". Jo is not sad about it until the night when she cries a little bit about the loss of hair.
Marmee notices that Meg has been sad lately so she asks her what's wrong. Meg tells her that she feels so lonely lately because if John isn't at work he is over at the neighbors during his spare time. Marmee says that it's because she gives no attention to him and is only worried about the children and doesn't make time to spend with her husband. Marmee tells her to one day make dinner for him and to get ready for when he gets home form work.
While Beth is very sick the family finds out that Beth may die. when they find this out they try to put away their grief and put each their part to make the last year a happy one. Beth finds a poem made for her and says that this made her feel that life was worthwhile. She says it is a comfort to know that someone loves her so much and feels as if she has helped them.
