- It was May 6th, 2022, when I heard what I thought was the worst news of my life, though I had no idea what was still coming. My mom had just gotten a message saying that one of my best friends, Kaiden Moore, had a seizure and was rushed to the hospital. For the next three days, I waited anxiously, hoping he would be okay. Then, my mom got the call. Kaiden had been on life support, but he was pronounced brain dead. He was gone. I remember feeling so many emotions all at once, but all I could do was stare blankly at my mom. Everything around me blurred out. Nothing felt real in that moment.

- Over the next few weeks, school felt completely frozen. Counselors were everywhere you looked, and every classroom felt still and quiet. Posters were passed around and signed, then hung in the hallways in Kaiden’s honor. People were posting about him all over social media. Everything felt different, like the energy of the whole school had shifted. You could hear kids crying from other classrooms, and for a while, most teachers just played movies instead of teaching. I can say without a doubt that 7th grade was the hardest year of my life so far.

- Over time, things slowly started to move again. Before I knew it, life was beginning to feel somewhat normal, at least on the surface. But the truth is, nothing ever really felt the same. I didn’t show it much after a while, like I had moved on, but I still think about him to this day. Some things just stay with you, even when the world keeps going.
- I grieved in silence, on my own time. Losing someone so close and so young had taken a real toll on me. I kept a strong face and lifted up the people around me who couldn't. A loss of a friend feels so different than a loss of an old loved one, it’s sudden, it’s unfair, and it leaves you with so many questions you’ll never get answered.
