James Madison, as my secretary of state, I order you to withhold the commissions that Adams had ordered before leaving office so that we have less federalists in power 
Mr. John Marshall, I, plaintiff William Marbury, order that a writ of mandamus be issued to make Jefferson deliver my commission that was ordered by John Adams to act as a Justice 
You have given me much to consider Mr. Marbury
If I issue the writ, Jefferson could simply ignore it. If I refuse to issue it, it will show weakness in the supreme court...
After considering your request, I have decided that Jefferson did indeed break the law, but I cannot issue a writ of mandamus, as extending the Supreme Court's jurisdiction would be unconstitutional
So what did all of this do then? Jefferson won this case, but what does it mean for the future of our country?
