Hello! I am your narrator, General Squawk! In the late 17th to early 18th century, Britain and France fought violently over land, fur trade, and resources in North America. This competition fueled wars like King William’s War and Queen Anne’s War. Depicted below is a scene from King Williams War (1689-1697). During this time, British colonists and French coureurs de bois waged primitive guerrilla warfare. Neither empire considered America significant enough to send normal troops, and focused more on battles in Europe. Each side relied on Native American allies to attack rival settlements. The French allies often launched violent raids on areas like Schenectady and Deerfield, and burned down villages. These conflicts had devastating outcomes and still set the stage for the French and Indian War.

On July 3, 1754, after a ten-hour siege, George Washington was forced to surrender Fort Necessity to the French and their Native allies. Washington’s small militia was originally sent by the governor of Virginia in hopes of asserting control over the Ohio River Valley. The British colonists wanted this land for westward expansion while the French were interested in this area due to its ability to link their Canadian holdings with those of the lower Mississippi Valley. France already established many forts within the Ohio River Valley and were infuriated by Washington's previous attack near Fort Duquesne. Eventually trapped by the Frenchmen and greatly outnumbered, Washington had no choice but to surrender at the hastily constructed Fort Necessity. This defeat marked the beginning of the French and Indian War.

In 1754, The British government called for an intercolonial congress in Albany, NY to deal with the ongoing conflict. 7/13 colonies sent delegates to the meeting. The immediate goal: ensure Iroquois loyalty to Britain. The longer-term goal: unite the colonies as a front against the French. In this scene, Franklin proposes the Albany Plan of Union, a premature aim for colonial unity. However, it’s rejected by both the colonies and British government due to independence concerns. Still, the congress highlights a need for intercolonial unity in the fight for North America.
