  • Debunking Indigenous StereotypeFor Centuries Indigenous peoples across North America have carried the weight of many stereotypes. In this documentary we will be talking about one, one of the most damaging, alcoholism. We have this reputation painted by others, that we are somehow destined to struggle with alcoholism. This damage to our identity is plastered everywhere, it is shown in the media, shown in class rooms.

  • I have noticed for every advertisement on substance abuse/alcoholism or mental health advertisements that is their favorite time to use our faces. This alone creates a big blow to our image today, fueling this stigma. The stereotype of the “drunken Indian” was created during colonization to justify racism and to assert control. Not the truth. We will explore the history and look into the cause of addictions and we will see how we have healed throughout this.

  • History“First Nations were subject to prohibitory alcohol laws under the Indian Act of 1876”, “The laws also reflected a widespread false belief among North Americans, that Indigenous Peoples were more prone to alcohol dependency, known as the firewater myth.”
