Juan Ponce de León was a young soldier while Columbus was making his second voyage. When he came to the new world, he settled in a Caribbean island named Hispaniola and became the military captain under the governor. ( Hispaniola is modern day Haiti and the Dominican Republic).

Juan Ponce de León explored Borinquen, (which was later named Puerto Rico) and heard many stories of gold. In his hopes to discover gold, his men killed lots of native people on the island. After this, King Ferdinand made him the governer of the island.
Juan Ponce de León heard about the ' Fountain of Youth' which was said to made one who drank it's waters become young again. He asked for permission to search for this glorious place. So, in 1513, set out for the 'Fountain of Youth'. After a month long of sailing, he reached a place with many tall palm tree's, sweet smelling flowers, and beautiful birds. They landed on the Catholic feast day , which was called Easter of the Flowers. In Spanish, it's Pascua Florida. So, he named the new land Florida. After sailing to and fro, up and down, and not finding the ‘Fountain of Youth’, he gave up the search and went back to Peurto Rico.
In 1521, Juan Ponce de León wet back to make a settlement in Florida, bringing 200 men with him. The Native Americans didn't like this invasion so they attacked, and a arrow struck Juan Ponce de León. He sailed back to Cuba and later died.
