After her mother passed away from cancer, Macy’s father raised her alone, following a list of advice and life lessons her mom had written for him before she died. This loss and the emotional distance between her and her father that followed becomes a big part of Macy’s personality and shapes how she handles love throughout the novel.

Elliot was one of Macy's closest friends through out childhood. They bonded with reading, understanding, and words. As they grew up their relationship turned romantic until they had a falling out. Macy had come to his town on new years eve thought he cheated on her and when her dad came to pick her up they got into a car accident and her dad died

Eliot and Macy reunite again when they are adults after not talking for several years. They get to know each other again and talk about what happened between them. Elliot had no idea about her dad or anything that had happened. They get back together and confess their love to each other.
