The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the main judicial branch of the United Nations.It was created in 1945 by the UN Charter and began operating in 1946 in The Hague, Netherlands.It replaced an earlier court called the Permanent Court of International Justice.The ICJ settles legal disputes between countries and gives advisory opinions on international law.Its rulings help maintain peaceful relations and cooperation between nations

Rules of the ICJ
The ICJ only hears cases between countries.Both countries must agree to the court’s jurisdiction before the case can proceed.Decisions are legally binding on the countries involved.If a country refuses to follow a ruling, the issue can be brought to the UN Security Council. The court can also issue advisory opinions for UN organizations on international law questions.
