On June 27th, a lottery is held in these villages and others. The children of the village are playing, collecting stones in a game, while the adults are slowly arriving. Soon, everybody arrives, and Mr. Summers comes out with a warndown wooden box filled with paper slips. The town does not want to get a new box, despite its age. Mrs. Hutchinson arrives late, not realizing that today was the day of the lottery, and everybody laughs. The lottery soon begins.

The husbands of each family walk up to the wooden box, and take a paper slip. The husbands draw for their household, so whoever is selected, will also have their household selected. Old Man Warner says that the lottery is necessary, and that “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.” Soon, every husband has a slip, and nervous look at their slips and the housewives begins gossiping about who could have the selected slip.

Mr. Hutchinson’s slip is the unlucky one, and now the Hutchinson family; Mrs. Hutchinson, Bill Hutchinson, Bill Jr., Nancy, and Dave, has to draw again. Mrs. Hutchinson, also known as Tessie, is extremely angry, trying to tell Mr. Summers that Mr. Hutchinson didn’t have enough time to select a slip. Hutchinson household now each has to draw, including the kids. Bill Jr., Nancy, and Davie all don’t get the slip, and neither does Bill.
