  • One major theme of "The Monsters are due on Maple Street" By Rod Sterling is that Blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences. One example that supports that theme is when The Residents of Maple Street started to blame Les Goodman thats he was the monster for his car starting on its own. I think this supports the theme because The Residents were trying to find a scapegoat from causing more trouble even though it did. Another example supporting the last one was that Tommy was trying to find a scapegoat by saying that the black shadow was the monster so Charlie could shoot whatever the shadow was, so that the Residents wouldn"t think that he was the monster. I think this support the theme because Tommy was trying to find a scapegoat so he wouldn"t be involved and people wouldn"t think that Tommy was the monster. So by trying to get out of it he said that the black shadow was the monster so Charlie could shoot it (who was actually Pete Van Horn) so Tommy can frame him and it looks like he did this on purpose. One last example that support this theme is when Charlie Shot Pete Vat Horn. I think this supports the theme because like stated before Tommy shouted that the shadow was the monster. So since he said that it caused Charlie to shoot it. Which caused the residents to think that Charlie killed Pete Vat Horn on Purpose. In conclusion I think that all these details support the theme because most of the characters were trying to find a scapegoat and a way out to not cause more problems.
