- Maya and Nikki Younger have always been very similar, but lately Nikki has been changing a lot and doesn't hang out with their close friend Essence very much. They are also dealing with the gentrification of their town, which Nikki is happy about but Maya isn't.
- Maya: Appearance is plain, modest, no makeup, she wants to celebrate her black history even though her principal just wants to celebrate diversity"I stayed plain faced. Modest in everything except attitude, Nikki says." (Watson 12)
- Nikki: Stylish, wears makeup and nailpolish, changes a lot"Nikki's style if made up of mismatched findings at secondhand stores and garments from the too-small-to wear-anymore section of Mom's closet.
