  • I feel very tired although its just noon... I must refeul before starting my school work!
  • Why do i feel energized after eating? I wonder if biology could satisfy my curiosity on the topic of metabolisim...
  • Lets look up my question on google..
  • Hmm.. Cellular respiration.. I'll watch a couple of videos while I snack on fruit!
  • -Metabolisim: the sum of all chimical reactions in a cell or organisim needed to maintain its living state.- Cellular respiration: metabolic processes that extract energy from molecules such as glucose. General equ. of cellular respiration: C6H12O6+ 6O2→ 6CO2+ 6H2O + Energy (ATP, heat).
  • Present in humans, AEROBIC (requiring oxygen) cellular respiration has 4 stages:Glycolysis;Pyruvate oxidation;Kreb's cycle;and the Electron Transport Chain. This video discusses stages 2 and 3 of aerobic cellular respiration (Lesson 4) !
  • PYRUVATE OXIDATION: The final products of glycolysis, 2 pyruvate molecules, leave the cytoplasm and enter the mitochondrial matrix via a transport protein.- Once pyruvate enters the mitocondrial matrix, it is 1st oxidized into an acetyl group, and then bonded to the end of a large molecule called Coenzyme A (CoA), This results in an acetyl-CoA complex. 2pyruvate+ 2NAD++ 2CoA→ 2acetyl-CoA+2NADH+ H++2CO2.
  • Pyruvate oxidation consists of 3 steps:Decarboxylation: removal of a carboxyl group from a pyruvate molecule to form CO2.Redox rxn: NAD+ gains 2 electrons to become NADH+ H.Addition of CoA to the acetyl group, then entering Kreb's cycle.
  • KREB'S CYCLE: 8 enzyme catalyzed reactions; 7 of them occuring in the mitochondrial matrix; while 1 binds to the matrix side of the inner mitochondrial membrane.
  • Step 1) the acytel group of acetyl CoA condenses with oxaloacetate to form citrate.Step 2)citrate is rearranged into isocitrate.Step 3)isocitrateis converted to α-ketoglutarate by losing CO2. 2H atoms reduce NAD + to NADH.Step 4) α-ketoglutarate is converted to succinyl-CoA, forming CO2. NAD+ is reduced to NADH.Step 5) Succinyl-CoA is converted to succinate. ATP is formed in substrate level phosphorylation.Step 6) Succinate is converted to fumarate. FAD is reduced to FADH2.Step 7) Fumarate is converted to malate.Step 8) Malate is converted to oxaloacetate. NAD+ is reduced to NADH.
