One of the main themes in The Monsters Are due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is Mankind is its own enemy.One reason is one page 675 woman says Well... sometimes I go to bed late at night. A couple of times... a couple of times I'd come out on the porch and see Mr.Goodman here in the wee hours of the morning standing out in front of his house...looking up at the sky. That's right looking up at the sky as if...as if he were waiting for something. As if he were for something . A second reason is because they all started to turn on each other. On page 85 they started to turn on each other. Another reason is according to figure one Understand the procedure now? Just stop a few of their machines and radios and telephones and lawn mowers... throw them into darkness for a few hours and then sit back and watch the pattern page 86. This shows that even the aliens believed that they all would turn on each other. This explains why they all became their own enemies and betrayed each other and also they proved the aliens right.
