- The Japanese enemies get closer, and closer to New Zealand. They now need to start rationing food and clothing. People around Silveu start to get worried. Alongside all the panic, Silvey finds out Sunny is crazy for her. Silvey doesn't know what to do. She knows he is 15 and she is only 12. She doesn't know how to feel.

- Good news! The American army came to New Zealand so they can protect each other from the Japs. On the same day, 3 Chinese-American soldiers went into Silvey's shop. Their names were Tom, Wayne, and Harry. They had strong American accents but their accents switch when they spoke Chinese. Silvey's Ma invited them over to eat dinner in the shop the week after. Tom agreed and the guys left.

- Sunny confessed his love to Silvey. He said he wanted to marry her someday. Silvey tells him she is still so young and she's not even sure she ever wants to get married. Sunny gave his big grin, then walked away. A few days pass by, and the Chinese-American soldiers came for dinner. Tom talked about how the Chan family make them feel right at home. He said they need to leave for war soon. Silvey sheds some tears. She hates war...
