Oscar sees a Golden Mongoose that inevitably saves him from suicide. It had a lot of distinct features from being called by Oscar as "the Golden Mongoose" (Diaz 190), to being stoic, having "Gold-limned eyes" (Diaz 190), and beautiful. But it doesn't save him with simply it's presence.
"If he'd landed on Route 18, as planned, it would have been lights out forever." (Diaz 191)"Instead of finding himself in nerd heaven---where every nerd gets fifty-eight virgins to role-play with---he woke up in Robert Wood Johnson with two broken legs and a seperated shoulder" (Diaz 191)

In the hospital of Robert Wood Johnson, Yunior, Oscar's sister, his mother, and uncle was there.
For some weird reason Oscar ignored everyone, "Ignored her[Lola], ignored me." (Diaz 192)

Many things happened after the hospital. Oscar lost weight, Yunior went around chasing girls like always. But one thing that was absolutley quizzical, was that he yearned for Lola. And when he saw her, thinking it's his last chance before she leaves to another place, tries to ask her out for dinner. He fell in love with Lola.
"Have dinner with me, Lola. I promise, I won't try to take your ****** off." (Diaz 198)
"of all the chicks I'd run up on ever, Lola was the one I'd never gotten a handle on. So why did it feel like she was the one who knew me best?" (Diaz 198)
