Odysseus goes alone to the underworld. As a part of Circe's instructions, he sacrificed his best sheep and protected the offering from other dead spirits in order to summon Tiresias, the blind prophet. He warned Odysseus of what is to come and terrible events that will occur. Fortunately, he positively said this will only happen if he kills the cows of Helius, the sun god. Tiresias even forecasted that they will have no more losses on the way to Ithaca if they do not touch the cows on the island of Thrinacia. Odysseus comes back to Aeaea with his crew to bury his soldier, Elpenor, as a part of his last wish. Circe warns Odysseus of the dangers he will face when getting to Thrinacia.

Odysseus sets out on the harsh journey to the island Thrinacia. Circe pointed out that this would be their toughest tribulation on the journey to Ithaca. She warned Odysseus they would have to face three monsters. The first were the sirens. Odysseus had to be tied up and his men put corks in their ears in order to resist the voices of the sirens. This would however be the easier part of the journey. When it's time to pass through a narrow, they must face Scylla, the cave monster, and Charybdis, the sea monster. Scylla would inevitably eat six men, but Charybdis has the chance to destroy the whole ship. If they try to escape from either monster, the other will come after them. Odysseus therefore decides to escape Charybdis, sacrificing his six best men to Scylla.
