  • Glide: 1
  • Haplodiploidity
  • Certain insects like the honey bee determine sex with the males being haploid and the females being diploid! Queen Bees will mate with male bees from other colonies and store the collected sperm in an organ called the 'spermatheca'. Depending on the size of her hive, she will manipulate the gender of her offspring by laying fertilized (female) eggs or unfertilized (male) eggs!
  • Glide: 2
  • Tranformer (tra) Doublsex (ddx) gene regulatory pathway
  • All of these chromosomes systems rely on the genetic pathway called the transformer and doublesex pathway. There is a primary signal which could be from the X or Y chromosome and this signal will activate the transformer gene; if activated, the doublesex gene splices in a female-specific way, and if not activated, the doublesex gene splices in a male-specific way.
  • Glide: 3
  • Through understanding these genetic pathways, scientists have better control over disease-carrying insects like mosquitos and can regulate those populations without pesticides. Sex determines the impact that an insect population will have on the environment as males and females have different duties. The diversity found in sex determination ultimately shows how there is no 'right' way for nature to do so.
