A skinny teenager named Roger tries to steal a woman's purse in Harlem, New York. When he grabs the bag he falls over and the woman grabs him by the neck.
The lady, Mrs Luella, takes Roger all the way back home with her to teach him some morals and to take care of him.
Roger washes his dirty face in the sink, but not before looking at the door and thinking about running away. Mrs Luella begins to make dinner for both of them as there's nobody home at Roger's house to take care of him.
Roger has the chance to steal Mrs Luella's pocketbook and run away with the door wide open, but he decides to stay still. This portrays how he has changed his attitude and is a better person now.
Mrs Luella and Roger have supper and she makes sure to not speak about anything that would make him uncomfortable, like his past, his family or his stealing.
After supper, Mrs Jones gives Roger ten dollars so he can buy some shoes that he really wanted and tells him to 'behave himself' from now on. They never meet again.
