- who's maria?
- she's our maid,shes very nice although father says she's overpaid. but she was telling me about this man,pavel i think he lives on your side of the fence
- Bruno was late arriving at the place in the fence where he met Shmuel everyday, as usual Shmuel was sitting cross-legged on the ground waiting for him
- i fell off my swing, and pavel helped me clean out the cut and put a bandage
- i wouldn't want to be a soldier, there aren't any good soldiers
- Shmuel asked Bruno who was maria,Bruno explained to Shmuel that Maria was his maid and told Shmuel that father says maria is overpaid

- Bruno asked Shmuel if he had any sister, Shmuel said 'no', Bruno says that Gretel is only twelve and she thinks she nows everything but shes a HOpeless case
