  • During the Progressive Era, workers endured long hours, low wages, and dangerous conditions. Child labor and workplace injuries were common. Employers often ignored safety and workers had few rights. The solution was labor unions like the AFL organized strikes and rallies to demand better pay, hours, and safety. Theodore Roosevelt helped and supported workers by encouraging fair negotiations during strikes.

  • In the late 1800s and early 1900s, immigrants arrived in the U.S. They settled in rapidly growing cities, and it became overcrowded and unsanitary. They faced discrimination in low-paying jobs. The solution was Jane Addams created settlement houses to assist immigrants with housing and childcare. Jane Addams and Jacob Riis helped inspire urban improvements. City governments began to build better infrastructure.

  • In the early 1900s women had few legal rights. They could not vote, had limited job opportunities, and were often expected to stay in the home. Laws and social norms denied women equal treatment in education, employment and politics. The solution was women's rights activists organized rallies, marches, and petitions to demand voting rights. Groups like NAWSA worked across decades to pressure lawmakers. The problem was solved by President Wilson signing a bill and thanks to Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul, and decades of activist, the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, granting women the right to vote nationwide.
