  • King Claudius calls Hamlet, who has a better claim to the throne, his son. Hamlet takes this as more of a slight than a term of endearment.

  • Claudius mocks Hamlet's depression for the loss of his father. He asks him how it's even possible for him to be upset about it

  • Hamlet expresses his distaste for the rapid transition from funeral to marriage. He's not trusting of Claudius or his mother

  • Hamlet is making a joke, saying that there is no villain that is not bad. He is obviously referring to Claudius, cementing is hatred.
  • Claudius enlists the help of Hamlet's old friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He is showing his distrust for Hamlet and his need for spies
