The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear and suspicion are destructive.
One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. One example of this theme is when the residents of Maple Street go and confront Les Goodman because they are suspicious of him. They are suspicious of Mr.Goodman because his car started up all by itself, and he never came outside to see what flew overhead, so they think he is an alien. Even though Mr.Goodman has been their neighbor for 5 years they still don't trust him. After the residents confront him, he gets very frustrated and angry that they don't trust him. This shows that suspicion can destroy and ruin friendship and trust. Another example that supports this theme is when the residents of Maple argue about who is an alien .The residents scream, shout, accuse and run around town as the lights in the house shut on and off. This shows how the fear of the residents destroyed and ruined everything. One last example for this theme is when Charlie shoots Pete Van Horn. Charlie didn't know he shot him because he saw a dark figure walking towards him, he got scared, Tommy yelled that it was the monster and he shot Pete as he was coming back from floral Street. This represents the theme because the fear of Charlie and the residents destroyed Pete's life. In conclusion, the theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is fright and skepticism can destroy.
