The Northerners were trying to abolish slavery, which produced a lot of abolitionists in the north.
It said that it was illegal to help a slave escape, and they were to immediately be sent back to their master.
SO the compromise let a new state, enter the Union as a free state.
This would even up the Congress Powers of North and South, and to stop the argument.
But this is just a temporary stop, and it did nothing to abolish slavery, but it evened up the free and slave states. The Civil War is still ahead.
