- After fighting for the Union in the Civil War he started working for the Republican Party. He was assigned to be Justice of Peace in Adams County. While he was Justice of Peace he helped many black people get justice against white people.
- Advocated for the Civil Rights Act: 1875

- The Civil Rights Act should be passed. It would prevent discrimination in public places.
- He was elected into the House of Representatives in 1869. A few years later in 1872 he became the first African American Speaker of the House.
