- Nelson Mandela, born in 1918 and a son of chief for the Xhosa-speaking Tembu people in South Africa. Mandela decided not to follow his father's footsteps and instead become a lawyer, this then lead to him joining the the ANC, a Black political party dedicated to promote more rights for black citizens
- During this period there was new raising political party in which Apartheid was formed into its own political agenda, which inforced white supremacy and racial segregation
- After multiple years of the racist system being enforced, there was a black political protest to bring attention to the issue. But sadly this ended horribly because there was a massacre killing hundreds of peaceful protesters
- WE WANT RIGHTS!
- shortly after the protest Mandela joined/formed a new branch of the ANC, which focused on participating in acts to sabotage the white political party. After law enforcement found out about this branch they quickly shut it down and this also lead to Mandela's trial. He was then arrested for treason and leaving the country illegally, and was convicted for five years in Robben Isalnd Prison
- later in 1963 Mandela and his 7 other partners were convicted again for possession of weapons, sabotage, teason, and violent conspiracy. Mandela admitted to many of the accusations which lead to a life sentence in prison. Mandela's first 18-30 years in prison was spent horribly, being beaten in a small cell without a bed or plumbing and was only allowed to have a visitors one a year. He was later then allowed to write letters to family and acquaintances. he was then sent to house arrest
- While Mandela was confined in home he was writing multiple letters and true stories about the horrible government. this then triggered a revolt against the government and lead to mandela being the first black president in South Africa in may of 1994
