  • Unlike other revolutions, Haiti's revolt truly took the Enlightenment ideals to heart, abolishing slavery and making everyone equal in the eyes of the government, challenging the norm of social structure built on race.
  • Now what were the Enlightenment ideals you may ask? They were built on the independence of people, the belief that the government should be given power by the power and that everyone should have equality, no matter their birth status.
  • Glide: 3
  • In an effort to prevent slave revolts in their own colonies, European colonizers (US, France, Britain) placed embargos on Haiti, fully halting trade with the island nation.
  • The debt France placed Haiti in destabilized their economy and DID take 100 years to pay off. Haiti went to European banks for loans, further putting them in debt. Haiti's destabilized economy today is directly related to France, but the French have denied this, leaving Haiti stranded in an economic slump, despite the economic and political promises that other nations have made to the island country.
  • Glide: 0
  • We're all equal, the Blancs are out, and we've established a Constitution that gives everyone equality and freedom!
  • And I'm Haiti's first President, Jean- Jaccques Dessalines!
  • And I am placing you under 1.5 million euros in debt for releasing my slaves! Pay it off!
  • But that'll take 100 years!
