Hello! My name is Alyssa Farley, and I'm here to tell you about my college experience so far!
For the next year, I saved my money and finally applied for the fall of 2020. Because covid was bad, I applied for online classes .
I quickly learned that online classes were a great fit for me. I enjoyed the freedom I had learning at home, but still had time to work more hours and have a balanced schedule.
After graduating from high school in 2019, I was lost. I felt as if I was the only person stuck, while all my friends moved on. In highschool, I was a straight A student, but never knew what I wanted to do.
After having a successful first semester, I decided to take more classes because I started out with two. I ended up taking four to 5 classes in the spring of 2021 and decided to take my first in person class.
In this class, I learned a lot about my artistic ability. This class allowed me to grow as an artist and taught me more about my own technique. Since this class went super well, I decided that I wanted to try out some more art classes in the fall.
The first in person class I took was painting 1. Going into it, I was terrfied because I truly didn't know what to expect. I signed up taking this class with my friend and it was the best decision I could make.
In the summer of 2021, I decided to take 5 summer classes and it was the worst decision I've made. During this yime, I was overwhelmed with working over 40 hours a week, on top of being a full time student.
I ended up reaching my breaking point and decided to reduce my work hours to not only focus on school, but to prioritize my mental health.
Reducing my hours, led to me pulling up my grades and making it through the semester with solid grades!
Juggling 5 classes left me burnt out. This semester, I endec up struggling a lot and thought about dropping out several times.
In the Spring of 2022, I decided to take one in person class and 5 online classes. As my time at Cape Fear is coming to an end, I took an art portfolio class to focus on art and my nest steps after cape fear.
In the fall of 2021, I decided to take some more classes on campus. As much as I love online classes, I needed to branch out and see what Cape Fear truly had to offer.
During this semester, I took printmaking and jewelery on campus and I ended up loving these classes. I learned a lot about myself as an artist and it made me exicted to learn and improve.
This semesster, I ended up reducing my hours to put all my focus into school. I also decided to take this class which required having zoom calls on tuesdays and thursdays
Taking this class was a new experience for me. I never taken zoom classes before and I ended up loving it. Having the freedom of making my own schedule and still having the time to talk through the different modules was very helpful.
After graduating from Cape Fear in August of 2022, I plan on transferring to UNCW in the spring of 2023. I'm glad I took this class because it truly opened my eyes and question a majority of topics.
Talking through the different topics each week, opened my eyes to my future. As my time here at Cape Fear is ending, I had to start thinking about my future after I get my associates in art.
Although I'm not too sure what the future holds, I enjoyed my time here at Cape Fear, I learned so much about myself and i'm ready to start a new chapter in my life.
