New England Colonies:Here, public schools were required. Every child was supposed to have an education; the Puritans wanted everyone to be able to understand and read the Bible.

Middle Colonies:Most of the time, parents would homeschool their kids. If not, than some children would attend church schools. This divide was caused by the disagreements over the content taught in the schools; the different religions clashed.

Southern Colonies:Because public education was very sparsely supported, neighbors would sometimes pool money to hire a teacher, while only the rich could afford private tutors. For college, older boys would go back to England.

The slave trade started when African Americans were kidnapped from Africa, then shipped to America. Once they had arrived, they were traded by merchants and settlers, then treated as property.

African American slaves were forced to work day and night, as gardeners, servants, midwives, drivers, nurses, carpenters, and blacksmiths. This was all for their masters; that is, whichever family of settlers had traded for the slave.

Even though they were people, African Americans had to work under conditions not fit for animals. They labored all day under the sun, picking and looking after crops. Escape was futile, so the best many could do for themselves was just try to adapt.
