  • Big events can change how people value the Australian dollar. For example, during the minerals booms from 2003 to 2007 and 2010 to 2012, the demand for Australian resources like iron ore and coal increased, which made the $A stronger. However, during the Global Financial Crisis (2008–2009), people were uncertain about the economy, so the value of the $A dropped. The same thing happened during COVID-19, when global trade slowed down and investors became more cautious, causing the dollar to fall.
  • COMING UP: Iron Ore Boom of 2005, GFC Hits in 2008, Interest Rate Cut 2024, COVID-19 Slows World Economy

  • RBA Holds Interest Rates:In April 2025, the RBA held interest rates at 4.35% to balance jobs and inflation (3.6% in March 2024).
  • In the past 6 months, lower inflation and slower global growth has made me wobble a bit.
  • Weak Economic Growth:Australia’s economy has grown slowly, with low GDP and high interest rates. This has made investors less confident in the $A.
  • U.S. Tariffs:In April 2025, new U.S. tariffs on imports caused global trade worries. This made the $A drop in value as markets reacted.
