- Phineas suffered through a great accident at the age of 26 years old in Vermont of September 13, 1848. It took place at his place of work at a construction zone while he was working.  In those moments Phineas was putting gun powder into a hole and padding it down with a tamping iron. However he or a coworker forgot an important step putting sand in the hole making the gun powder exposed to anything. So while Phineas was sitting near the whole with gun powder his tamping iron fell through somehow and the the whole  with gun powder exploded making the iron rod shoot through Phineas skull. 
- After the accident Phineas was rushed to the hospital in a Ox cart. However he was still so calm and was able to stay calm the entire way. When they got the the city they looked for Dr. Harlow who took phineas in intensive care. He was stunned when he first saw him but put him straight to bed. Only a few seconds later the bed was covered in blood and phineas looked a if he was going to die. He was put on bed rest for a while.
- By some miracle Phineas survived but he was not the same. Before his accidents Phineas was a respectful, obedient, and a great worker. That all changed after the accident. Phineas became rude and disrespectful to his workers and female workers and his whole personality had changed. He was just not the same and even though he was recovered from the accident he was not himself mentally.
