As a simple Jade, Teo knew there was no chance he’dever be chosen by the omniscient Sol to compete—something he was constantly reminded of by the posters (13).
But only Teo andhis mom—Quetzal, the goddess of birds—couldcommunicate with them directly (Thomas 12).
Teo is the son of the goddess of birds, Quetzal, and as his mom is a low level Goddess, called a jade, he doesn't expect much when they travel to the demigod trials. He also always keeps his wings bound to avoid bullying.

Iwas supposed to be in the stands, watching the SunbearerTrials, not competing in them (74).
'I just want to get it over with,' the young boy said, chin lowered and cheeks red. 'Don’t make this harder than it needs to be (73).
Teo and Xio get picked for the trials despite both being the sons of lower level gods and the last jade being picked 140 years ago. Niya, Teo's gold or high level friend, is excited to have him with her.

He couldn’t cross over to Xio’s section to helphim because then they’d both get their scores docked, but if he did nothing, Ocelo was going to crush Xio under a rockslide (131).
Teo lets his wings out and they turn blue while he flys to save Xio from another demigod named Ocelo. He actually survives to his surprise and both him and Xio place above Ocelo.
