In 1524 Francisco Pizarro was over fifty years old and became a wealthy landowner ruling Indians on his encomienda in Panama. The Inca Empire in South America stretched from Ecuador. In 1530 with 180 men and 27 horses they set off again to conquer what is now Mexico but this time with a much larger army and more support.
ATAHUALPA'S DEATH
In 1527 Huayna Capac a powerful Incan Emperor who had ruled for 34 years had died. For the first time the kingdom was divided between two sons: Huascar and Atahualpa. Atahualpa was too ambitious to remain loyal to Huascar and civil war broke out between the two brothers. He took Huascar prisoner and then killed most of the royal family to prevent disputes over the succession.
THE INCAS RESPONSE
Spanish conquistador Pizarro crossed the Andes with 62 horsemen and 106 soldiers to reach Cajamarca. The chaplain gave a bible to Atahualpa but when translated he threw it to the ground. Inca king Atahualpa was taken prisoner by the Spanish at the request of the Inca and accused of treason. Pizarro then gave the signal for the hidden men to attack and 2000 men were killed.
CONCLUSION
: Pizarro had reluctantly agreed to Atahualpa’s death and regretted the evil deed involved in the conquest. Pizarro and his men then moved on to occupy Cuzco the ancient capital of the Incas. Cuzco was in the highlands and in 1535 he founded Lima in the lowlands.
The Incas decided to retaliate against the Spaniards as the nobles were bitter at the treatment they had received and the fact that they had murdered Atahualpa. The Inca siege lasted from February to August 1536. The siege was broken when more reinforcements of Spaniards arrived. The Spanish regained control of the area but the new Inca, Manco Inca continued to resist in the mountains for eight more years.
The Spanish conquistadors of the Inca Empire, Almagro, Pizarro and Pizacamanca, were so greedy in their quest for gold and silver that they began fighting against each other. It took the Spanish government 40 years to re-establish peaceful and orderly government in the court. The Spaniards tried to rule through the reigning Inca but the last Lord Inca Tupac Amaru was put to death in 1571.
