I read whatever I could, whenever I could to grasp that feeling of becoming someone else and escaping the world around me.
Yet, as I grew up, I struggled to get lost in books like I used to. There were so many things wrong with the world, so many problems to solve that it felt impossible and irresponsible to escape it all. Sometimes, I stopped reading all together.

It would be so nice to have something exciting to read again...
And... maybe, reading doesn't have to feel like escaping. After all, books can help us to understand what might fix the world. The stories may be fiction, but the themes are real.
It took many years, many libraries, and many deep conversations for me to warm back up to the idea of reading voraciously... this time, both for pleasure and for enlightenment.

I still dive into books just as I did when I was younger. Now, though, I see how my books connect to the world around me and think about how stories can help to heal our broken world. I try every genre, searching for messages that give hope and provide the joy necessary to navigate dark times, not escape them.
