  • Investigate the degree of the emotional intensity affecting the role of amygdala in aiding memory recall of emotional stimuli.
  • 3 weeks later....
  • Health Right-handed females volunteering for the experiment
  • Participants laid in an fMRI scanner, they were shown 96 pictures at random. Each picture was viewed for 2.88s, with 12.96s in between each. The participants would focus on a fixation cross. The fMRI machine collected information about the activity in the brain during the picture viewing.
  • When participants saw each picture, they would press one of four buttons with their right-hand
  • 3
  • 0
  • Extremely emotionally intense
  • Not emotionally intense
  • The participants returned to complete a recognition task. They viewed the same 96 pictures along with an additional 48 foils, matched to the original for valence arousal.Responses were rated 1 for forgotten, 2 for familiar 3 for remembered with certainty
  • Hence, there's a connection between amygdala activation emotional memory.Emotional experiences are better remembered!
  • Participants' ratings for emotional intensity reflected valence arousal ratings.Amygdala activation significantly correlated with higher ratings of emotions!
  • Left amygdala activity during encoding predicts subsequent memory. The degree which they can do that is a function of emotional intensity
