Symbolism
Rosaura's mother tells her that she is not like Luciana's other friends because she's the maid's daughter. Her mom believes that she will be treated differently and fell badly. Unfortunately, her mother is right.
Irony
"Rosaura felt that she had never been so happy in all her life" (Heker 3).
Character vs. CharacterRosaura argues with her mother because she doesn't understand that her mother is trying to protect her from being treated differently than the other kids. She thinks that her mom thinks rich people are evil.
Theme
"As if the slightest change might shatter an infinitely delicate balance" (Heker 5).
The monkey was a symbol for Rosaura because it was working at the party, it was following orders, and it was also caged by society. She didn't realize the situation until the end.
Thank you for all your help, my pet." (Heker 5)

Rosaura enjoyed the party. She even felt special for being asked to help. In the end, Señora Ines made her feel bad because she thought of her as a worker.
Class differences can negatively impact the way people are treated. In this case, Rosaura was treated differently because of social class and is given money instead of the gift bag like the other guests.
