Deep down, at the very bottom of Lockshore Cove, Lucy and Flip were exploring before dinner. Lucy was looking at shells. Digging her tale into the sand, she brushed up each shiny purple shell she could find while Flip was out trying his best to make friends with the fish.
“Lucy! Flip! Dinner!” Their dad calls. Lucy rushes home right away, leaving Flip in the dust. “Hey!” Flip rubs the sand off his face and speeds on home with Lucy. “Did you make any new fish friends?” Lucy asks him. Flip crosses his arms and huffs. “Nope. None.” “Again?” Lucy laughs.
Both siblings swim through the door and sit down at the table. Their dad comes out of the kitchen holding a fresh plate of seaweed. “BLEGHH!” Flip scrunches his face. “You’re going to have to learn to like it eventually, Flip” His dad tells him. Lucy takes a big fork-full and shoves it into her mouth. “Come on, Flip! Just try it again.” “P.U.” Flip pinches his nose.
“Did you work on the shelter at all today?” Their dad asks. “A little bit.” Responds Flip and Lucy. The family has a tall stone shelter that they’re building in their backyard for when Captain Jack comes around. “I don’t understand,” Flip says, confused, “why should we be afraid of Captain Jack?” “Captain Jack is very dangerous, Flip.” His father responds immediately. “He shakes the water to destroy our home. We must avoid him at all costs!”
All of a sudden, their house starts to shake. “Oh no.” Lucy whispers. “Get to the shelter!” Their dad yells. All the mermaids jump out of their chairs and swim toward the back door, Flip being the last one out. They swim toward the big brick building and all slide inside, squished in the corner.
The vibrations of the boat above shake the water, shaking their stone shelter with it. Lucy starts to cry. Dad holds her in his arms and rubs her back. He tells her it will be okay. While they’re distracted, Flip moves toward the open door. He peeks his head out and looks up at the top of the water. He sees the bottom of Captain Jacks boat, driving away from them. The shaking slowly comes to a halt.
“Flip, get away from there!” His dad swims over to him and wraps his arm around his waist, pulling him back toward the corner. “You can’t do that Flip!” His dad yells. Just as the shaking stops and the boat disappears,, Flip started to cry. “I'm sorry, Buddy. I just don’t want you to get hurt.” His dad pulls him into a tight hug. “Now, let’s get you two to bed.”
The next day, Flip’s out of the house trying to make friends with the fish again. Lucy stayed back to work on the shelter. Then, when he’s out alone, he starts to feel the water and sand vibrate. He looks up to see the bottom of Captain Jack’s boat right above him. He starts to panic. “Flip!” He hears his dad roar.
Flip swims back to the shelter and tucks in with his family. “Flip, I don’t want to ask you again. You have to try to be safer.” Flip nodded his head, but in his heart, he was still confused why he wasn’t able to ever see Captain Jack.
That night, Flip couldn't sleep. He lay awake in his bed, only able to think of one thing: Captain Jack. He had so many questions. Why couldn’t he see him? What was so bad about him? Just then, Flip had a miraculous idea.
“Next time Captain Jack's boat goes by, I’ll swim up to it and say hi to him! But I’ll need protection.”
The next day, Flip built himself a suit of armor in preparation for the Captain’s arrival. He took all the scrap metal he found and wrapped it around himself. He felt like a warrior. Just then, the water started to shake…
Flip takes a deep breath before propelling himself toward the top of the ocean. He rubs the water out of his eyes before he sees it: Captain Jack’s boat. Even bigger that he imagined. It has huge blue sails and a pirates flag right at the top. Flip sees a tall man with a white beard and a hat standing at the wheel of the boat. It’s Captain Jack.
Flip swims up to the boat, nervous to see what will happen. He cups his hands around his mouth and calls out…
"Captain Jack! Down here!"
Captain Jack turns around and smiles. “Oh, hello there!” He waves. He walks over to where Flip is swimming and kneels down. “You don’t seem so scary!” The words slip out of Flips mouth. “Oops, sorry to be rude.” Flip blushes. “I’m Flip!” “I’m Captain Jack. Why did you think I’d be scary?”
“It’s my family…” Flip responds. “When your boat drives by, it shakes the water. My dad says you’re a bad guy, that you want the water to shake and want our house to fall.” Captain Jack frowns. “Do you think it would be possible to speak to your father?” “Sure! I’ll go get him.” Flip dives underwater.
Flip swims down to the shelter to see his sister and his dad huddled in the corner. “Where were you?” His sister calls out, “We were so worried!” His dad looks furious. “Just come with me.” Flip says, “Trust me, it will be worth it.” They both look scared, but follow Flip out of the shelter and to the top of the water.
Hey, I have an idea!
When Flip’s dad and Lucy get to the top of the water, they both gasp. “Captain Jack?” They yell. “Please don’t be scared!” Says the Captain, “I wanted to apologise. I didn’t realise that my boat what shaking the water and I also would never want to make you scared of me. I’m so sorry.” Dad and Lucy look at each other, then smile.” It’s okay!” They say, “We’re sorry we judged you!”
I'm glad you don't have to try to be friends with fish anymore, Flip! HAHA
Now, every Friday, Flip’s family spends time on the beach with Captain Jack and his daughter. Captain Jack changed his boat route to stop the risk of shaking for the mermaids, but if they hear him going by, they’ll swim up to wave at him! Sometimes friends come from the most unlikely places.
