A Long Way Gone is set in Sierra Leone in 1993, during a civil war. Ishmael's town is invaded, and he is forced to relocate with his friends.
Beah and his friends visit his brother in his Aunt's village. As Beah travels to the village where his parents are supposed to be, this is the final time he sees his brother. When he arrives, he discovers several charred dead and the entire village has been destroyed.
Beah is eventually became a soldier, and he is terrified of becoming the one thing he despises: a killer. He is taught that each rebel he murders is a kind of vengeance for the assassination of his family. To cope with stress, he and his buddies become addicted to drugs. He is eventually turned up to UNICEF.
Beah is having a hard time letting go of his past and looking forward to a fresh future at the rehabilitation clinic. There, a nurse named Esther teaches him how to forgive himself for everything he's done. In Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital, he is welcomed by a family who supports him.
Beah travels to New York in order to tell his story to others. He meets other survivors on his journey, as well as Laura Simms, his future foster mother.
Ishmael Beah immigrated to the United States and now lives there.
