- While the barrier may be politically motivated, the barrier along-side a subsidy attempts to not just correct positive production externality but also create employment, advance economic growth and contribute to the encouragement to develop a new market sector.

Tariffs raises the cost of imported goods which makes it more difficult for businesses to compete and hence can lead to decreased investment and economic growth.

This had a negative effect on US as the affected countries imposed tariffs on US goods which escalating tensions and sparked concerns about a potential global trade war. These concerns led to a cycle of retaliation which also led to increased tensions in international trade.
