Under the compromise of 1850 will be the fugitive slave law which mandates that escaped slaves shall be returned to their owners. Both the North and South have been compromised as the state of California has been deemed free territory.
The fugitive slave law was put into place after the Mexican-American war. The question of slavery became heated due to all of the territory gained from Mexico. To compensate to both the North and the South Senator Henry Clay made the compromise of 1850 including one of the points being the fugitive slave law.

After gaining the territory from Mexico it heightened issues over slavery. The fugitive slave law was apart of the compromise and it made the North angry. Often times the North did not follow these rules. The slaves would sometimes be helped to freedom rather than being returned to their masters.

This scene illustrate Harriets efforts to help slaves escape to a safe place in the north. She began helping slaves shortly after the fugitive slave law was passed. Her efforts were due to the fact that her family had slaves and she knew slavery firsthand. Although the slaves that her family owned were not treated poorly in fact is was quite the opposite.
